What We Do
From internationally acclaimed artists, to front-row fans, piano teachers and even those who simply enjoy humming along, there are few whose lives have not been touched by music in some form or another. For many, that begins at an early age with music education programs — ones that encourage students to appreciate the role music plays in society, and more importantly to contribute to it.
Yet, as more and more budgets are cut in West Michigan’s schools, these programs are in danger of being silenced. Without proper support and suf- ficient funding, our children will soon miss out on what is a key component of, not just a well-rounded education, but also a well-rounded life.
And that’s our cue.
Enter Music to Benefit Music, a nonprofit group that raises funds for music programs in West Michigan’s public and private schools to ensure that no budding musician falls through the cracks, and no voice is drowned out. All proceeds from our annual concert series and various other events go toward things like after-school workshops, music education scholarships and instrument purchases for local schools.
But schools aren’t the only place you’ll hear our rally cry. MTBM is also dedicated to championing the benefits of music within our communities through concerts, adult workshops
and other activities that everyone can appreciate.
Good tunes. Great cause. Now let’s get on with the show.
Who We Are
As a music lover and collector I became alarmed over the past few years about the state of music education in our schools. As more and more budgets were under pressure in local schools, I felt our music education programs were in danger of being silenced. Without support, thousands of children would soon miss out on what I believe is a key component of not just a well-rounded education, but also a well-rounded life. In 2006, I formed a 501c3 non-profit company – Music to Benefit Music – to help raise funds for music programs in West Michigan’s public and private schools. As a volunteer director I receive no compensation so every penny raised goes directly into supporting local music programs. All proceeds from our concerts – held at The Pinnacle Center – and other fund raising activities goes directly toward after-school workshops, music education scholarships and instrument purchases for area schools.
Since our inception Readin’, Writin’ & Ryth-ma-tic has provided over $165,000 of instruments and support items to area schools.
I was fortunate to have some additional music lovers accept Music to Benefit Music Board positions to allow us to grow the organization and make an even greater impact in our community. They receive no compensation and devote time and effort to keep music alive in the educational experience of our children.
I hope you enjoy the site and invite you to support music in the community.
